In the past, the best way to learn how to play the guitar was to take lessons from an instructor. While this is still probably the best way to learn the guitar, the evolution of the Internet has made it much easier for people to learn at home. In fact, thousands of people are doing it on a daily basis. This is why I highly suggest anyone who has ever wanted to play guitar, start to learn it now, since it has never been easier to do so.

However, the biggest problem that many self-taught guitar players can run into is sloppy habits. If practiced over and over, these habits can eventually hamper your ability to play as well as you possibly can. To help you avoid some of these bad habits, here are a few tips to keep you on track to becoming a better guitar player.

Create good practice habits

The most important thing you can do is to get into a practice routine. When you first start to learn the guitar, I would suggest you play a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Take your time when you are practicing and don't rush through your chart exercises. The more time you put into practice, the faster you will learn. Of course, you don't want to over do it and play too long either. This can lead to sore fingers and an achy back.

Know your guitar

A good guitarist knows his guitar like the back of his hand. Learn about all the parts of your guitar and how they work in harmony to produce the sounds we all love to hear. When you know your guitar intimately, it makes it that much easier to play.

Study your chords

To become a good player, you need fast and strong fingers that play instinctively. This can only be done by learning the basic chords and practicing them over and over again, until you can do them in your sleep.

Use the right posture

This is the most common mistake many new guitarists make. Be sure to sit down with your back straight and hold the guitar level with your body. This makes it much easier to play the guitar and won't lead to sloppy posture.

By using the simple tips above, you will quickly be on your way to becoming a much better guitarist, and develop the proper habits that will serve you for a lifetime of beautiful music!
