Buying a new guitar for your child isn't as easy a task as it would seem. Just because a guitar in your local music shop has a certain sticker price, doesn't mean you should actually be paying that amount! Think of it as a suggested retail price.
If you want to get a good bargain, you have to have a plan. When you walk into a guitar shop, you need to have your game face on and just like playing cards, never show any real emotion. Let the salesperson see what you want them to see, and keep your emotions in check.
Mention to the salesperson that you have been shopping around and would like to view a few guitars. Never let the salesperson know which guitar you truly want, so be sure to check out a nice balance of cheap and expensive guitars. Be sure to take your time and even if you fall in love with a guitar, try to resist the impulse to buy it right away.
Why? Because you will want to shop around and find the best price possible on all of the kids guitars before making your final decision. Keep in mind that simple things such as the type of case can drive up the price, or bring it down significantly. Again, never pay the sticker price of the guitar. This is a huge mistake.
Once you have found the shop with the best price on the guitar you like, be sure to ask the salesperson what is the best price they can possibly give you. If you can get anywhere between 10-15% off the list price, you have done well. Now you need to be prepared to walk out of the store if the salesperson refuses to budge and don't be afraid to mention competing music shops and why you will take your business there. You need to make sure they know you aren't an easy mark!
Another thing to consider is that sometimes a salesperson can't go any lower, if the guitar happens to be on sale. In this case, simply ask if they will throw in some free accessories.
By keeping these simple tips in mind, you are almost assured of getting a much better deal on your new guitar, then if you simply walked into your local music shop unprepared. Have fun, and remember, it's all one big game!
