Whenever we were expecting our first child, my wife approached me about getting a midwife and I of course had absolutely no clue what they actually were. I thought it had something to do with polygamy or something of that matter, I was that ignorant and clueless. She then explained to me exactly what a midwife did, and I still couldn't really grasp the concept, as I wanted us to have a doctor for our baby and it was going to be an extremely hard sell for me to change my mind. Of course my wife was pretty insistent on exactly what she wanted to do, and she said that she was the one having the baby and that she should have the most say, which obviously didn't sit very well with me. She finally convinced me to go to a midwife information seminar, which lasted only about an hour. I reluctantly agreed, but was pretty sure I wasn't going to change my mind.
However, once we got there and met a number of the midwives, and watched a video on exactly what they did, I was extremely comfortable with the whole process. I slowly started to change my mind, and agreed to have one. It was probably one of the best decisions that I have ever made in regards to my wife's pregnancy. The midwife we had was really a godsend for us, as she was there with us every step of the way, and every time we had a question or concern she did her best to answer our questions and calm our fears. The best part of having a midwife, comes during the birth of your baby, as they are there to assist your wife, and help coach you through the whole process. You essentially are not alone why your wife is delivering. After the baby is born, they generally will visit your house and make sure that everything is going fine with your baby.
I have to say that if you are on the fence about having a midwife, or you have never heard of them, then I highly suggest you look into what they can do for you. You will see that it is much more personal than having a doctor, and a midwife is easily going to be one of the best decisions you make for you and your baby. They help to make the entire birthing process much easier, and I can tell you that just knowing they are only a phone call away, really helps to put your mind at ease.
