Whenever you become a new parent, you have to make a plethora of decisions that you never expected to. Simply reading baby books and speaking with friends and family members who have their own children, cannot prepare you for what it is like to actually have a baby. I of course found this out firsthand whenever I became a father for the very first time. While there were many things that went as I expected, there were countless things that I was totally unprepared for. Of course the biggest decision that I had to face with my baby daughter was whether or not to get her immunization shots or not. This was something that I was totally unprepared for the first, and had no clue that there was such a raging debate about this topic.
I first found out that there was so much controversy about this subject when my mother brought the topic up for discussion, as the scheduled date for my baby's first round of shots was drawing near. She explained to me why so many people really fretted over this decision and the fears many parents had over the after effects of these shots. This of course prompted me to immediately do research on the subject to find out more information. What I discovered did not make my decision any easier, as both proponents of the shots and those opposed to them, made very strong cases.
Doctors and proponents of immunization will tell you that these shots have helped to wipe out many of the diseases and sicknesses that were so rampant only 40 or 50 years ago. Today, these diseases are an afterthought among many parents, but lest we forget, they were the cause of great debilitation and death among many children not so long ago. Those who oppose the immunization of children, will tell you that they can cause many complications, including allergies and other sicknesses.
I decided to get my daughter her immunization shots, because I felt that the pros more than outweighed the cons. When speaking to her doctor about the shots, he told me he felt it was my responsibility to get the shots for not only the safety of my own child, but those that also came into contact with her. In the end, this was what really swayed me, and I have to say I have not regretted the decision for one moment. However, this is not an easy choice for any parent, and the best thing you can do is to educate yourself on the subject like I did, before making your final decision.
