When you've had a tiring week, a good massage is usually all you need to get you right back up. But massages do more than let you relax. Did you know that giving your baby a massage can help in his development? Infant massage involves the use of massage and stroke techniques aimed at enhancing the psychological and physiological development of a baby. A deeper bond is also formed between parents and babies when infant massage is done because of the effects of touch therapy.
Doing a massage
There are no strict rules as to how many times a baby is to be massaged but it is ideal that it be done every day. You can even incorporate it into your baby's daily routine if you want, just to make sure that your baby gets his daily massage. With your baby in mind, consider doing the massage after he takes a bath and before he is clothed. Some babies don't like being dressed and undressed so doing the massage before you even dress up your baby saves you a step and keeps your baby as comfortable as possible. Family members can also schedule who will do the massage on certain days so that the entire family can form a bond with your baby. Just make sure that massages are not scheduled within 20 minutes after feeding time and not too close before bedtime.
What you'll need
Massages for adults and babies will more or less require the same things but babies are more sensitive and fragile. To get started, find yourself a warm room without drafts. Block off some time so you and your baby can have uninterrupted time together and play some soft music to relax your baby. Babies, especially those who are very young, relax better when they are contained so use towels or cushions to support your child. A c-shaped cushion will form a nest around your baby and so offers good support. Just cover the c-shaped cushion with soft towels before placing your baby on it. For oils, you can pretty much use any baby oil in the market. You can also use natural oils like sweet almond oil. Just warm up the oil you'll be using by placing these containers in a bowl of warm water.
Don't have the time?
If you feel that you just don't have the time to set aside for massage time with your baby, don't worry. Even doin git once or twice a week will still have a powerful effect and help you form a deeper bond with your infant.
