A huge part of being a parent involves learning how to take care of your kids' health! There are lots of books as well as television programs that guide parents in providing the right care for their kids so they remain healthy.
After some time, parents become intuitive and can easily pick up when their child is feeling ill. However, we don't always have what it takes to make them better on our own. Parents need to be able to identify when to call on the professionals to address their children's health needs. Here are some key signs that indicate you need to take your child to see a doctor.
1. A nagging cough. Sometimes, kids can start coughing due to allergic tendencies or a sudden change in climate. As a parent, you could first tackle that cough with a children's cough medicine. However, if you notice that the cough persists for a few days, it may be a sign that it's being triggered by something you may not be able to figure out. Take your child to the pediatrician to get the best possible treatment.
2. A persistent fever. In many cases, a bad cold can come with a slight fever, especially if the cold causes things like sinus infections or a sore throat. Typically, parents can bring down the child's temperature at home by giving them over the counter medication and placing cold socks on their feet. However, if these simple home remedies don't seem to work, take the child to the doctor immediately.
3. A deep, bloody wound. It is almost natural for kids to hurt themselves while playing! The good thing is that most of the bruises and cuts they get can easily be treated by mom and dad with ointments and bandages. However, if you notice that a wound is deep and is bleeding profusely, you should never try to tackle that on your own. Take the child to the emergency room, because they just might need to get stitches!
Parents like to feel that they can do everything it takes to take care of their kids. However, the reality is there will be times when your home-based care just isn't enough. Always be cautious as a parent and recognize when you need help with taking care of your kids' health. At the end of the day, what really matters most is that they're completely healed and well!
